AUM offers government 10 scholarships, at €30,000 each The American University of Malta has offered the government 10 scholarships, amounting to over €300,000 – averaging at €30,000 – which will be awarded to students in Malta. It was in 2015 when the Maltese parliament, in a 15-hour marathon session, approved the transfer of a site in Zonqor and old warehouses alongside Dock 1 in Cospicua to be used by AUM. The delivery of the scholarships is part of an agreement signed with the AUM, who will be investing €120 million in the education sector. “The decision that Malta should have another university is in line with the Government’s pledge of guaranteeing pluralism in the higher education sector, in particular with regard to tertiary students. The scholarship awardee students will join the first intake at the AUM building in Cospicua next month,” the government said in a statement. The government argued that the broader choice of undergraduate courses for students meant that more young people will be prepared to enter the workforce. “The unemployment rate is already the lowest ever recorded and the Government is committed to continue investing in education and to offer more scholarships,” it said. The 10 scholarships cover three courses: Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, and Bachelor of Science in Game Development. The duration of each course is of four years. The Government will also be providing stipends to the ten students awarded the scholarships. “The Government believes that money spent on post-secondary and tertiary education, including the provision of grants, is fundamental to the economic and social success of Malta and Gozo,” it added. Applications for these scholarships are open until 20 August 2017 on www.edu.gov.mt/aum.
